Osteopathy is a hands-on approach to health maintenance. We treat with manipulation to assist the inherent forces of the body, allowing normal structure and function to be maintained. Treatment is aimed at the structural problems present, not the disease entity. By removing the obstructions to health, osteopathic physicians are able to treat virtually any illness or trauma. Their philosophy is the body is a unit whose parts integrally affect each other. Therefore, dysfunction in one area affects other areas as well.

DOs tend to think more holistically, looking for the relationships between medical problems and the many factors that influence a person’s health. Osteopathic physicians are trained to look for the relationship between the structure (bones, muscles, connective tissues, fluids. . . ) of the body and its function. Appreciating the fact that each person is a unique individual, DOs are less focused than MDs on labeling a patient with a diagnosis and try to offer each patient a treatment plan that meets their individual needs.

Pediatric Problems:

We make every effort to see infants as soon after birth as possible.

Dr. Pelkey has a special interest in infants and children. The first day is the most important day of life. The first year is the most important year and the first five years are considered to be the formative years. Whatever occurs during this period will have an effect on the rest of that individual’s life. Problems may arise during pregnancy, at birth, or due to trauma or inflammatory diseases of childhood. With all of life before him/her, those first hours, days or years may decide whether life for that child and those touched by it will be a joy or a burden. Osteopaths are trained to recognize the significant but subtle effects of birth trauma that may predispose the child to chronic or recurrent illnesses or developmental delay. Osteopathic treatment can make a difference in such diverse disorders as:

Feeding and Digestive problems:

Colic, GERD, Constipation

Birth Trauma

Cerebral Palsy

Ear, Nose & Throat and Respiratory Problems

Seizures

Torticollis and Orthopedic problems
